Thirty students from our school participated in a three-week language study program at Robina State High School in the Gold Coast, Australia, from August 4th to 24th. While staying with host families, they attended regular classes at the local school and enjoyed school life alongside the local students. Each student was assigned a buddy at school, and some students had already become accustomed to the schedule and school atmosphere by the first week. In English classes, students made earnest efforts to express their feelings and thoughts. Additionally, they were praised for their performance, especially in Japanese classes, which they took together with their buddies. In a presentation about their memorable experiences in Australia, students were able to express their thoughts and feelings about the differences between Japan and Australia, including school, classes, host families, buddies, and Australian customs. In the final class, they wrote letters to their buddies and host families. This seemed to be a good opportunity for them to reflect on their three weeks in Australia. Three weeks is by no means a long time, and it is actually a very short time to fully develop relationships with buddies and host families. Nevertheless, from the way students interacted with their buddies at the farewell party and with their host families on the departure day, it was clear that each student had made active efforts to communicate with them.
